Our other plan is working on getting the McCarthy kids into the Movement. Letting them see that we are not the enemy. We’re here for them when the election process screws them over. And it will screw them over.
McCarthy won’t get elected. Even if he does get elected, he won’t be able to stop the war. And even if he stops the war, he won’t be able to stop the causes of the war. His domestic agenda? Forget it. He’ll be so trapped into satisfying the forces that got him elected that he won’t be able to change anything.
With Kennedy, the jury is out. Kennedy kids are hipper to what’s going on. Like Bobby, they’re far more pragmatic. It’s a hard pill to swallow, but Bobby could be a friend of the Movement I think. Others would rather not believe that, but he could get into office and change things. His domestic agenda would focus on poverty and civil rights. I could definitely see him helping the situation in the ghettos.
Since the McCarthy kids are so idealistic, we’re going to have to focus on them. If they ever became radicalized, we’d all have to watch out. Every single one of us. I think that’s where the potential for real fury would come.
Tom Hayden wants to create a caravan of actors to cross the country, providing entertainment & message. There was a whole lot of discussion on what we could all do locally. For me, locally is Chicago. With one convention here, there is no local. Only national.
