I guess I can tell you now that two people resigned yesterday because of the Civil Rights issue. I don’t know them because they worked in the press office. But it created quite a stink here. There are definitely two groups of people now: those who think The Senator should concentrate on the civil rights question and those who are almost ready to work for Kennedy.
I’m starting to think I should work for Bobby.
I haven’t told anyone this yet. I don’t want to upset Craig and Becca. I don’t know what to do.
I can’t talk to my parents because Dad hates everything Kennedy. He plans on voting for Nixon. Mom just wants me to quit working for The Senator. She would love it if I went to work for Kennedy, but not for the same reasons. She thinks a “better quality of person” works for Bobby.
Hollywood Bobby, as he is known in the HQ.
I’m very afraid if I tell Craig and Becca then they will think I’m a traitor. They HATE Bobby.
The Senator released a statement yesterday, after the quittings, to tell people that everyone knows his stance on civil rights. We all are supposed to know how he feels about it, but that doesn’t mean anything. Lots of people have opinions and don’t act on them.
Where are the changes he’s planning to make? Why doesn’t he connect with people in poverty? Why isn’t he talking to the people who have no voice in our country?
There’s only one person I can talk to, and that’s Mrs. Stoutmiller. Maybe she can help me figure it out. I need to call her tonight.
