On January 6, a federal grand jury in Boston indicted famous pediatrician Dr. Benjamin Spock, Yale Chaplain William Sloane Coffin, Jr. & others on counseling men on how to avoid the draft. They faced five years in jail and 10K in fines if convicted.
Over a week ago, the Associated Press ran a photo in several newspapers of a billboard in Amarillo, Texas. It read, "Beautify America, Get a Haircut.”
Several days later, Ann Landers printed a letter from a high school girl who believes in free love. "I am not a tramp,” she writes. “I come from a high-class family and I make good grades. I see nothing wrong with sleeping with different boys so long as I like them and they like me - as a person, I mean... Why should a girl save herself for a man who is not making any great effort to save himself for her?”
Landers responded: “If you are sleeping around so you will be experienced for Mr. Right, you can stop now. Mr. Right will not view your list of bed partners as impressive credentials. In fact, he might get the idea that you are a bit of an alley cat. I don't deceive myself into believing my advice will cut any mustard with you, Toots..." (printed in the 1/12/68 Portsmouth Herald)
A story makes its way through the daily papers about the six college students who face permanent blindness for dropping LSD and then staring into the sun. It makes the front page of the Portsmouth Herald. (1/13/68)
