The most striking thing about ‘Teen Magazine, circa 1962 is that it appears that all of the teens back then look so old. The girls trying for Miss ‘Teen 1962 look like they are in college. Professional, serious and caked in makeup, it’s easy to see that at least some of these “girls” would be married within a year or two.
The difference in eras is apparent to Janine. For the first time, she’s glad that she is no longer caught in the “rat pack era.” Try as she might, she can’t get away from the idea that things seemed so sheltered back then.
An article about Soupy Sales proclaims that “A slapstick clown named Soupy Sales is causing a riot as TV’s new King.” If only all riots could bring that kind of happiness. It’s deeply ironic, in Janine’s eyes.
